Joe Rogan is one of the few modern-day celebrities worthy of the title of renaissance man. The American has performed a variety of roles throughout career in the entertainment industry, such as his time on 90’s sitcom News Radio, his hosting of the hit reality TV-show Fear Factor, his years as a stand-up comedian, hosting the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, and commentating for the UFC.
What some people don’t know however, is that he has extensive experience in a number of martial arts. Rogan first started practicing karate as a teen growing up in New Jersey as a way to protect himself before moving on to taekwondo. Rogan proved to possess a natural talent for the striking-art, working his way up to black belt level. He then went on to win the US Open at lightweight, before beating both the middleweight and heavyweight champions to become grand champion aged just 19.
With the advent of the UFC demonstrating the efficiency of grappling-based martial arts, in 1996 Rogan diversified his martial arts repertoire and took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training with pioneering grappler Carlos Gracie at his school in Hollywood, California. Rogan continued consistently training in jiu-jitsu throughout the ensuing years, earning his black-belts from Jean Jacques Machado and Eddie Bravo.
Despite his busy career, Rogan has maintained his training regime. Who could forget the video of him obliterating the heavy bag with a turning-side-kick while UFC legend Georges St Pierre looked on astonished. In this most recent example of this, Rogan demonstrated his sizeable striking prowess as he hits pads held by multiple-time world muay thai kickboxing champion Liam Harrison.
In the video Harrison looks on, amazed at the power that Rogan’s generates with every strike. Harrison had been in California to appear on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast where he talked about earning a livelihood fighting around the world as one of the world’s best stand-up fighters.
